I’ve had my eye on a pro printer for quite a while now. I’ve thrown some time and money at learning some of the intricacies of printing; I purchased a ColorMunki printer and monitor calibration device several years ago. However, I didn’t get the true photo printer to go with it. While listening to “The Digital Story,” my favorite photography podcast, Derrick, the host, spoke about the rebate B&H was advertising for the Pixma Pro-100. It’s really a Canon rebate. B&H isn’t the only game in town offer the deal. But at B&H, you get the printer and 50 sheets of Canon semi-gloss 9×13 paper for $369. The paper is a $50 value and the mail-in rebate is for $250! I had no excuse. And it was Father’s Day, so how could the finance committee say no?!?!
The printer came within the week. After unboxing it, I ran a sheet through it and printed off a shot of the Pyramids. The color accuracy FINALLY met my expectations. Despite having calibrated my monitor and using ICC paper profiles, I never have been really happy with the color accuracy of my old printer. The Pixma Pro-100 nailed it. Now it’s time to start stocking up on some more specially papers and experimenting. Red River Paper makes an amazing metallic paper I have in 5×7. I’ll be making a 9×13 order shortly. I’m also thinking about experimenting with a canvas print. Red River has a good tutorial on printing on canvas – which the Pro-100 does – and how to make a gallery wrap.
